On October 2, the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office announced that Iranian airlines, excluding Mahan Air, have been granted permission to operate 40 flights per day to and from Najaf International Airport, ending a suspension that followed U.S. sanctions.
Iraq suspended all flights to and from Iran last week in accordance with U.S. sanctions.
Reuters reported that the United States is preparing to issue a one‑month Treasury waiver permitting flights that carry Shi’ite Muslim pilgrims between Iran and Iraq.
The Iraqi government had requested exemptions for travel associated with pilgrimage, medical treatment, and education.
The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the United States’ positive response and its cooperation in granting the requested exemption.
The United States accuses the Iranian carrier Mahan Air of transporting Revolutionary Guard personnel, weapons, and drones.
