IRS CEO Frank Bisignano announced that the agency has introduced a new mobile application enabling taxpayers to securely verify refund status and make payments directly from their smartphones. The launch expands the IRS’s digital services while integrating artificial intelligence to combat fraud and enhance customer support.

The app, highlighted during an appearance on Fox Business’ “Varney & Co.,” positions the agency to meet rising demand for online tools. Bisignano noted that the IRS processed approximately 600 million online inquiries last year—roughly double the prior year’s volume—and that the new platform consolidates refund tracking and payment functions into a single, convenient mobile experience.

The CEO emphasized the platform’s security posture, stating, “100%, 100% secure.” He explained that users will no longer be redirected to a legacy website but can complete all tasks within the app.

To protect sensitive financial data, the IRS will employ continuous cybersecurity monitoring and internal surveillance, according to Bisignano. “It’s important for us to always patrol the perimeter and surveil the interior, and we’ll use agents to do that to ensure we’re in good shape,” he said.

The agency also reported progress on identity‑theft backlogs. Citing an inspector general’s review covering fiscal years 2023‑2025, Bisignano said the inventory peaked at about 500,000 cases in 2024 and has since been reduced by more than half, with processing times improving.

While AI is being leveraged across many IRS operations, Bisignano clarified that it is not currently deployed to address the identity‑theft backlog. He reiterated the agency’s focus on delivering better service while aggressively eliminating fraud.

“We’re just gonna make it better every day,” he added, underscoring the IRS’s “completely focused on eliminating fraud” mission.
