The five-match T20I series between India and England began with a dramatic encounter at the Banks Homes Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. While Shreyas Iyer made his captaincy debut for India’s T20I team, the first innings concluded with a mix of heroics and controversy as weather disrupted play before the second innings could begin.
Communication Breakdown Leads to Costly Run-Out for India
The incident occurred in the second over after opener Sanju Samson was dismissed for 1. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan joined opener Abhishek Sharma at the crease. On his second ball, Kishan attempted a run by flicking a delivery toward mid-wicket, but Harry Brook swiftly intercepted the ball and threw to It Buttler, who dislodged the bails as Kishan dived short of the crease.
Stump microphones captured the ensuing exchange, with Abhishek expressing frustration: “Why did you arrive? What are you doing, Ishan?” Kishan defended his decision, stating, “It was right in front and was my call,” before departing for a two-ball duck. The mix-up marked Kishan’s second consecutive T20I run-out, following a similar incident against Ireland.

Abhishek Sharma’s Blazing Knock Sets Record as Rain Washes Out Match
Despite the early wicket, Abhishek Sharma anchored India’s recovery with a explosive 59 off 24 balls, including 6 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 245.83. His innings set a new T20I record as the fastest player to reach 100 sixes in terms of balls faced. Shreyas Iyer complemented the innings with a steady 68 off 47 deliveries, while Shivam Dubey (42 off 21) provided late impetus to guide India to 189/7 in 20 overs. England’s Saqi Mahmood led the bowling effort with 3 for 33.
Heavy rain during the innings break rendered the outfield unplayable, forcing officials to abandon the match. The series now moves to Old Trafford in Manchester for the second T20I on July 4, where India will aim to address their running-between-the-wickets issues.
