Ishan Kishan Opens Up About the Mindset Behind His Record-Breaking 270 in Duleep Trophy Final
Ishan Kishan shared insights into the mental approach that fueled his remarkable 270-run innings in the Duleep Trophy 2026 final, revealing how high-pressure moments tend to bring out both his most aggressive and composed batting.
Ishan Kishan thrives when the pressure rises
As East Zone captain, Kishan delivered a commanding performance in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, transforming the match into a display of individual brilliance. The left-handed batsman scored 270 runs off 334 balls, hitting 30 fours and seven sixes, helping East Zone post a formidable 708 in their first innings. His prolonged stay at the crease now stands among the top eight individual scores in Duleep Trophy history.
In a conversation shared via a BCCI video ahead of the third day’s play, Kishan discussed how pressure doesn’t hinder his performance — instead, it enhances it. He noted that intense matches combine elements of tension and aggression that align naturally with his playing style. Kishan expressed his preference for challenging circumstances, particularly when early wickets fall or the team requires a stabilizing force at the crease. He emphasized that maintaining composure while staying ready to strike aggressively is key to his success under pressure.
“I think when it’s a big match, there’s a kind of pressure. And I feel that in that pressure, my best game comes, because when you’re batting, you’re a little nervous, but at the same time, you’re aggressive too. You’re watching; if you get the ball, you’ll hit it. So I think it’s a very good mixture of calm and being aggressive. So it works a lot for me when there are such stages, where either the wickets have fallen early. Whenever I’m in such situations, I enjoy it a lot,” Kishan said.
Breaking the target into smaller goals
Despite reaching the milestone of 270, Kishan stressed that personal records weren’t his primary focus during the innings. Instead, he prioritized the team’s needs at every stage of the game. By compartmentalizing the innings into manageable targets, he maintained concentration throughout his long wait for the crease and prevented distractions from overshadowing the main objective.
“Rather than thinking about your own batting, you have your team goal. What will benefit the team? So when you move forward according to that, your batting becomes very good. If the total has reached 400 now, let’s do 450 first. Then let’s do 450 to 500. So, you know, this is a process that you go through,” Kishan explained.

Adapting to difficult Chepauk conditions and handling Mohammed Siraj
Kishan’s innings was further influenced by the challenging pitch conditions in Chennai. With large boundaries making sixes hard to come by and the ball losing its firmness over time, he had to exert extra effort to maintain the scoring rate. Balancing aggressive intent with wicket preservation became essential, a task he executed skillfully throughout his innings.
“It’s very difficult. You have to put in a lot of effort to hit shots. The boundary on one side was very big. The ball was getting soft in between. So you had to put in a lot of effort for the boundary,” Kishan remarked.
A notable aspect of his knock was his confrontation with India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who sought to unsettle the batter with short-pitched deliveries. Kishan adjusted by dropping his stance slightly but clarified that this was not a deliberate tactic to combat bouncers. Rather, it was a precautionary measure to safeguard his wicket without compromising his ability to score.
“When Siraj was putting in, I was batting more bent down. It wasn’t to tackle the bouncer. But it was to avoid throwing the wicket. If I go to hit it and get out somewhere,” Kishan revealed.
