Israel has declined a Lebanese request for the withdrawal of its forces from southern Lebanon during US-mediated discussions, according to a report by Israel’s public broadcaster, KAN, on Friday.
Citing Israeli officials, the broadcaster stated that Lebanon raised the issue of withdrawal during meetings involving military representatives from both nations under the sponsorship of the United States. Israel subsequently informed mediators that it would not comply with the demand.
The talks also explored the potential for a comprehensive ceasefire agreement, which would include deliberations regarding Hezbollah’s weaponry. KAN noted, citing Lebanese media, that the military delegations are not engaging in direct dialogue, with all communications being relayed via the US mediator.
Reports indicate that Lebanon sought clarification on the terminology Israel uses to justify its military actions, specifically regarding “imminent danger” and “responses to threats.” Meanwhile, Israel is reportedly advocating for a direct communication channel between the two national armies and cooperation toward the disarmament of Hezbollah.
Lebanon has rejected direct coordination, maintaining that the immediate priority is the cessation of Israeli attacks and adherence to the arrangements currently being pursued through US mediation.
During the negotiations, Israeli military representatives focused on Hezbollah’s drone capabilities and military infrastructure located north of the Litani River. According to the broadcaster, Israeli officials presented maps of alleged Hezbollah sites, urging the Lebanese army to dismantle these facilities and seize stored weaponry.
Israel has maintained its military operations in Lebanon despite a ceasefire that took effect on April 17 and was extended for 45 days starting May 17, following indirect US-led talks.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that Israeli attacks since March 2 have resulted in 3,355 deaths across the country.
