On Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that Israel would retaliate if Iran were to attack, after Iran fired missiles toward the Jordanian city of Aqaba.
“Should Iran attack Israel, we will respond and strike back, irrespective of any other considerations, without any conditions,” Katz said during a visit to ZAKA, an emergency rescue organization in Tel Aviv, as reported by Israel’s Channel 12.
“Our first step would be to target the missile launchers,” he added.
His comments followed reports that missile debris from the Iranian launch reportedly fell in the area.
Earlier on Sunday, the Jordanian military announced that it had intercepted three of four Iranian missiles launched toward the kingdom; the remaining missile landed in a remote area of southern Jordan, causing no casualties or damage.
Israeli media reported explosions in Aqaba and the nearby Israeli city of Eilat following aerial interception operations.
The Israeli military said it detected missiles launched from Iran toward Aqaba and warned that some projectiles or debris could land within Israel.
In a subsequent statement, the Israeli army said it launched several interceptor missiles toward the debris of an intercepted missile after sirens sounded in Jordan, according to the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth.
Channel 12 reported that flight operations at Ramon Airport near Eilat were affected.
Israel’s Channel 13 reported that U.S. aerial refueling aircraft had been evacuated from the airport following the attack, without providing further details.
