Israel Warns Travelers of Stringent Dutch Luggage Inspections Amid West Bank Goods Ban

Israel’s Foreign Ministry has issued a warning to citizens traveling to the Netherlands, advising them to expect “lengthy and invasive” luggage inspections. This advisory comes in the wake of the Netherlands implementing broad new sanctions on the import of Israeli goods.

The Foreign Ministry and the Israeli Embassy in The Hague stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates to the public as the situation develops.

The ban, which officially took effect on September 22, targets all goods produced in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. Additionally, the prohibition extends to items that are only partially manufactured or sourced in these settlement areas. Under these regulations, even a single component originating from the region classifies the entire product as banned, regardless of where the primary manufacturing took place, such as in Tel Aviv.

Furthermore, the law applies retroactively, meaning the purchase date of the goods prior to the ban’s implementation does not exempt them from penalties.

In a related diplomatic escalation, Foreign Minister Sa’ar ordered Israeli diplomats in the Netherlands to return their official documentation to Israel within seven days. Upon their return, the diplomatic immunities and privileges granted by Israel will expire. Sa’ar stated that if the Netherlands wishes to continue representing its interests in relation to the Palestinians, it must do so from within the territory of the Palestinian Authority rather than from Israeli territory.

“If the Netherlands wishes to continue representing its interests vis-à-vis the Palestinians, it may do so from the territory of the Palestinian Authority and not from the territory of the State of Israel,” Sa’ar stated.
