Israeli Ministry Demands Closure of Turkish Consulate in Jerusalem Over Security Concerns

Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli has called for the immediate closure of the Turkish Consulate in Jerusalem following a new strategic study that alleges Ankara is expanding its influence in the city through political, civil, and ideological channels while supporting Hamas.

A report by the Jerusalem Center for Applied Policy (JCAP), titled “Turkey’s Phased Plan to Conquer Jerusalem: Neo-Ottoman Ambitions and the Muslim Brotherhood Doctrine,” outlines Turkey’s efforts to establish long-term control over the region. It claims President Recep Tayyip Erdogan views Jerusalem as a strategic objective within a broader Middle Eastern vision, including efforts to strengthen ties with Hamas and challenge Israeli sovereignty.

The study highlights Turkey’s multi-pronged approach, including cultural institutions, academic scholarships, and economic aid, to consolidate its presence in Jerusalem. It also accuses Ankara of deepening its military and political foothold in Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon, coordinating with Hamas through its National Intelligence Organization (MIT).

Study Links Turkish Consulate to Terrorism Support

The report characterizes the Turkish Consulate in Jerusalem as a key vehicle for advancing Ankara’s regional agenda. It allegedly facilitates Israel-designated terrorist activities by supporting Islamist groups and Palestinian associations, according to the researchers.

Chikli stated, “There is no justification for allowing a diplomatic mission that undermines Israel’s sovereignty in Jerusalem and actively promotes Hamas and the Turkish regime’s interests.” He added that all Turkish government presence, including media outlets, should be removed from the city.

Experts Recommend Strategic Countermeasure Against Turkey

The authors stress that Turkey’s influence in Jerusalem extends beyond politics, encompassing ideological, economic, and security efforts. They urge Israel to develop a comprehensive strategy to counter this growing threat and neutralize Turkey’s regional activities.

Chikli concluded, “This study reinforces the need to close the Turkish Consulate and eliminate all Turkish government entities operating in Jerusalem.”
