‘It’s a Surreal Feeling’: Amol Muzumdar Opens Up After India’s Asian Games Gold, Eyes LA Olympics | Exclusive

India’s women’s cricket team opened the nation’s gold‑medal tally at the Aichi‑Nagoya Asian Games in a dramatic fashion, clinching the win over Sri Lanka by 147 runs on Tuesday.

Coach Hardwarne Kaur’s side posted 216/3 before restricting Sri Lanka to 69 runs, retaking the gold they won at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.

For head coach Amol Muzumdar, the triumph carries deep personal significance. In an exclusive interview with MyKhel, he called the moment a “surreal feeling” and recalled how his passion for the Asian Games dates back to his childhood.

“It’s a surreal feeling,” he told reporters, adding, “winning a gold cup is a dream; I’ve admired the Asian Games since I was little.”

The gold arrives after a stellar run for India’s women under Muzumdar. Earlier this month the side claimed the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup, defeating Sri Lanka in the final to add to their record‑extending eighth continental title.

The Goal is Set

Speaking of the subsequent challenge, Muzumdar said his next focus is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“Every competition holds its own importance. We advance forward. The Asian Games feel like a dress rehearsal for the events at hand, and the Los Angeles Games should be India’s ultimate target.”

“We’re clearly moving forward, and I’m confident we’re on the right path. This will be our aim going forward.”

The coach also reflected on his nearly three‑year tenure with the team, lauding the players for their dedication and work ethic.

“It’s been almost three years with this side, and these young women have been fantastic. They serve as excellent role models and ambassadors for the sport.”

He highlighted the meticulous preparations behind recent successes, especially the intense training camp ahead of the Asia Cup in Dubai.

“Before each tournament we conduct rigorous camps. The effort is immense—particularly during the gruelling Asia Cup preparation in Dubai—but the team’s pride in achieving such results is matched only by enthusiasm.”

Muzumdar further praised the pair of senior leaders, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, calling them inspiring figures for the next generation.

“They are indeed outstanding role models for all aspiring athletes. Youngsters will look up to both of them, with Kaur exemplifying leadership and Mandhana showing senior‑player excellence.”
