India began their five-match T20I series with a comfortable eight-wicket victory at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 6. While Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten century stole the spotlight, young all-rounder Naman Dhir also made a strong impression in his T20I debut.
Haryana star makes an instant impact on T20I debut
West Indies were bundled out for 171 in 19.1 overs after being asked to bat first. Captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford offered steadying half-centuries, but India’s bowlers struck at regular intervals to curb any momentum.
Dhir was outstanding with the ball, finishing with 3/31. The 26-year-old showed remarkable composure in a high-pressure debut role.
Notably, all three of his wickets came immediately after the batsmen had hit him for sixes. Hope, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer each cleared the boundary off his off-spin, only for Dhir to dismiss them with the very next ball each time.
His positive reaction to adversity made the spell even more impressive. Primarily a middle-order batter, Dhir demonstrated that his off-spin could become a genuine weapon rather than just a part-time option.
India chased 172 comfortably, reaching the target in 14.4 overs, with Iyer smashing an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls.
Shreyas Iyer heaps praise on the young all-rounder
Following the match, India captain Iyer quickly praised Dhir’s contribution and attitude. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Iyer noted how Dhir recognised the conditions and was eager to bowl in key phases of the innings.
“Yeah, special player, I must say. Like showing that attitude and approach, wanting to bowl in those crucial moments, he realized that the ball was turning, and then he capitalized on it. So commendable performance by him, and I love his attitude,” said Iyer.
The captain’s remarks underscore what made Dhir’s performance so encouraging. Rather than simply filling in with a few overs, he embraced responsibility and repeatedly found ways to respond whenever the West Indies batters attacked him.
Selection for New Zealand tour gives clear message
Dhir’s impressive T20I debut marks another rapid rise in his international career. He had already made his ODI debut against West Indies in the preceding series before earning his T20I chance against the same opposition.
The all-rounder has now been included in India’s squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, signaling the management’s faith in his potential.
With his ability to bat in the middle order and bowl handy off-spin, Dhir offers India valuable balance. His performances against West Indies could herald a bigger role as selectors assess him for India’s long-term white-ball plans.
