Kansas City Royals outfielder Jac Caglianone departed Tuesday’s matchup versus the San Francisco Giants in the early stages after sustaining a shoulder injury while attempting a diving catch.
In the top of the fifth, Caglianone chased a short fly ball hit by Giants catcher Jesús Rodríguez. He launched into a dive, aiming for a backhanded grab near the foul line, but the ball slipped from his glove as he landed awkwardly on the ground. Although he quickly regained his feet and relayed the ball into the infield, Rodríguez was ruled safe at second base.
Caglianone stayed in the game for the remainder of the inning and even signaled the Royals’ training staff to hold off when they approached to assess him. However, the club removed him from the lineup in the sixth inning, citing right‑shoulder soreness.
Details regarding the nature of the injury have not yet been disclosed.
The Giants capitalized on the moment, scoring twice in the frame. After Caglianone’s exit, Drew Gilbert drove in Rodríguez with a single to right field, helping San Francisco extend their lead to 2‑1 after having trailed earlier in the contest.
Prior to Tuesday’s game, Caglianone was batting .260 with 16 home runs and 37 RBIs this season, marking his second year with Kansas City.
The Royals entered the series with a 41‑60 record, occupying last place in the AL Central, though they have won three of their last four outings since the All‑Star break—excluding a 19‑2 drubbing by the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Kansas City opened the three‑game set with a 4‑3 victory on Monday night, highlighted by a ninth‑inning bunt single from Nick Loftin.
