Former WWE legend Jim Ross reports that physicians are conducting examinations of a lesion identified on his kidney, and that the shunt implanted in his brain earlier this year has been producing unbearable head pain severe enough to disrupt his rest.
He shared the update during the opening segment of the latest episode of Grilling JR, a live YouTube broadcast produced alongside Conrad Thompson following Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite tribute to former wrestler PAC.
“I have spent this week undergoing numerous medical appointments after noticing a small abnormality on my kidney, and our team is performing extensive tests,” Ross explained.
“Because the shunt in my brain has become problematic, I am scheduling a scanner examination for tomorrow and will forward the results to my neurosurgeon for evaluation. He may decide the device simply needs adjustment,” he added.
The computed tomography (CT) scan is set for Thursday, with a subsequent appointment with my neurosurgeon planned for later that week.
“Having undergone multiple adjustments already, these changes aren’t a new problem. However, my fatigue persists, and my oncologist has arranged for me to consult a specialist in Oklahoma City regarding possible malignancy. The uncertainty has made the past weeks incredibly taxing.”
When asked about the shunt’s impact, Ross described experiencing severe, “ blistering ” headaches that prevent him from sleeping through the night.
Those headaches are debilitating, leading him to wake frequently throughout the night, though his post‑operative skull wound is healing well.
Before the procedure, excess cerebrospinal fluid compromised my balance, which contributed to the repeated falls reported prior to surgery.
“I suspect the instability caused my frequent falls. I experienced a wrist fracture last year, dislocated parts of my groin and knees, and fractured two toes on the morning of my surgery—my overall condition was distressingly poor.”
Spending extensive time in medical waiting rooms reinforced my outlook, reminding me that others endure far more serious hardships. As a result, I remain appreciative of my care team.
Ross noted that the CT scan is scheduled for Thursday, with a follow‑up visit with his neurosurgeon planned for later in the week.
“The shunt, designed to relieve cerebrospinal fluid buildup, has previously required three adjustments,” he stated.
During the tribute coverage, he praised the evening’s performance, highlighting the strength of the Pittsburgh audience, the quality of the video production, and excellent commentaries from Tony Schiavone and Excalibur. He singled out Bri SCC’s respectful victory over Andrade El Idolo at All Out as a perfect display of talent.
Recalling the moments when he addressed the deaths of Owen Hart and Eddie Guerrero on live TV, Ross remarked that tragedy never truly disappears, though each occasion leaves a lasting imprint.
During the broadcast, Ross and Thompson watched PAC complete a 30‑minute Iron Man match against Kenny Omega from the February 2020 Dynamite episode in Kansas City. He called PAC “one of the best performers I have ever seen.”
We extend our warmest wishes to James Ross for a swift and full recovery.
