Japanese Avant‑Garde Icon Yayoi Kusama Dies at 97

Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist renowned for her polka‑dot paintings, phallic sculptures, and bold performances that rattled the New York and European art scenes in the 1960s, has passed away at the age of 97. Her immersive “Infinity Room” mirror installations later turned into viral sensations and major attractions at museums worldwide.

Her death was announced jointly by the Yayoi Kusama Museum and the Yayoi Kusama Foundation on Thursday. A notice posted on the museum’s website confirmed that she died on August 14.
