When questioned about his confidence in securing the five required endorsements, Tashima expressed optimism, noting that he has already reached out to several member associations and received positive responses.
Though he acknowledged the difficulty of the task, Tashima remained resolute about his ambitions for the March election in Morocco, stating, “Of course, I hope I will win. It is not easy.”
Tashima’s platform is built upon a philosophy of “sincerity, soundness, fair play, and integrity,” which he believes are essential values for the FIFA presidency.
Addressing the controversy surrounding the Balogun red card—where reports suggested US President Donald Trump contacted Infantino to request a review of the ban—Tashima expressed concern. “I have never seen the red card [process] and who can play the next game,” he remarked.
“I hope such an occurrence never happens in world football. There has been no explanation as to how this came to happen,” he added.
Tashima further criticized the current administration, claiming that many critical questions remain unanswered by President Infantino. Drawing on over 20 years of experience with the Japan Football Association, the Asian Football Confederation, and FIFA, he believes he is well-positioned to implement meaningful change.
Tashima is not the only individual eyeing the role; former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega also announced his candidacy last month.
Vega informed BBC Sport that he has already secured more than five endorsements, although he declined to name the specific member associations supporting his bid.
Under FIFA rules, candidates must demonstrate an “active role” in football for two of the last five years. Vega maintains that his status as a club shareholder satisfies this eligibility requirement.
Having failed to secure the necessary five associations in three previous attempts, Vega’s history contrasts with Tashima’s entry, positioning the Japanese official as the first formidable challenger to Infantino’s leadership.
