Friday night saw over 45,000 fans converge at Yankee Stadium, drawn not by baseball but by a New York‑city milestone: Jay‑Z’s performance celebrating the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt. This marked the opening night of a three‑night residency, with the first show devoted to Reasonable Doubt and the second slated for The Blueprint, this year celebrating its 25th anniversary. Throughout both evenings, Jay‑Z kept a low‑key stage aesthetic—“I think the statement piece in a Jay‑Z show is Jay‑Z,” said Willo Perron, the residency’s creative director, in a recent Wired interview. The set featured guest appearances from Beyoncé, Nas, Eminem, Slick Rick, and his daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Additional clips and full set lists from both nights are available below.
The night began with a surprise duet with Beyoncé. The two performed “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” before Jay‑Z moved into solo numbers such as “Made In America (Freestyle)” and “Brooklyn’s Finest.” Other collaborators joined throughout: Memphis Bleek, Jaz‑O, Alicia Keys—who performed “Empire State of Mind”—and Nas, who shared the stage for several tracks. Jay‑Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, also made a cameo, playing piano for “Feelin’ It.”
Saturday’s program highlighted The Blueprint, attracting another sold‑out crowd that broke Yankee Stadium’s ticket‑sales record. The second night opened with Slick Rick’s “The Ruler’s Back,” followed by Eminem’s appearance on “Renegade.” Pharrell received the most stage time, joining Jay‑Z on five songs including “Excuse Me Miss” and “Frontin.’’ Pharrell quipped, “HOV the greatest of all time. It’s not up for discussion.”
Jay‑Z concludes the residency tonight in the final Extra Innings show. The anniversary tour will continue this fall with stops in London, Paris, and Los Angeles.
