Special‑teams player Irv Charles is moving from the last‑place New York Jets to the Super Bowl‑champion Seattle Seahawks, a source confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday.
The 29‑year‑old center of attention on Jets’ punt and kickoff coverage was traded for a conditional seventh‑round pick in 2028.
After missing the entire 2025 season to recover from ACL surgery, Charles had begun to reassert himself in 2024. He recorded 14 tackles as a gunner in over 400 special‑teams snaps before an injury in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins derailed his return to the Jets’ active roster.
Seattle’s recent success on special teams—finishing the season ranked first in the league—has prompted the coaching staff to add depth at gunner. By bringing in former college wide receiver Emmanuel Henderson Jr. in the sixth round and now adding Charles, the Seahawks’ coordinator Jay Harbaugh is giving the unit another key piece.
Charles earned his place with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2023. Though he played in 25 games over two seasons and logged 53 offensive snaps, he saw limited action on offense, registering no receptions and only two targets.
The trade was first reported by The Athletic.
