While Sunday night marked a successful debut for John Harbaugh as the head coach of the Giants, it was a disappointing outing for the rest of the Harbaugh family.
Entering Week 1 as the league’s heaviest favorites, Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers failed to deliver at home. The Arizona Cardinals maintained the lead throughout the contest and locked down the fourth quarter to secure a 26-14 victory. Following the loss, Harbaugh admitted that “quite a few things” went wrong for his squad.
“Some uncharacteristic things happened. Give them credit for making them happen,” Harbaugh stated during his post-game press conference. “I would call it sloppy at times. Too sloppy. That’s something we need to get fixed.”
Harbaugh pointed to seven penalties as a primary issue, but the team also struggled with two turnovers, a blocked punt, and multiple failed fourth-down conversions. The offense managed only 268 total yards, a stark contrast to the high expectations Harbaugh had set for quarterback Justin Herbert and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel during the offseason.
While the duo will have ample opportunity to adjust, the Chargers’ opening performance mirrored the struggles seen at the end of the 2025 season—a trajectory the organization had hoped to avoid.
