John Goodman Cast in HBO’s The Last of Us Season 3 Expansion

The ensemble for HBO’s The Last of Us season three continues to grow.

John Goodman, Ian Alexander, and Laura Bailey have been added to the HBO adaptation of the video game franchise. The network announced the casting on Saturday, noting that September 26 holds special significance in The Last of Us mythology as the day the cordyceps outbreak begins, triggering the storyline for both the games and the series.

Goodman (known for The Righteous Gemstones and Digger) and Alexander (from Star Trek: Discovery) will portray Joey and Paco, a cordial pair who dub themselves the “Heroes of the Highway.” Bailey, recognized for her work on Critical Role, will take on the role of Elizabeth, a leader within the religious group known as the Seraphites.

They join previously announced cast members Jason Ritter, Patrick Wilson, Clea DuVall, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr., alongside returning performers Bella Ramsey, Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna, Jeffrey Wright, Ariella Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and Spencer Lord.

Both Alexander and Bailey may already be known to fans of the game, having provided voices in The Last of Us Part II—Alexander as Lev and Bailey as Abby, the latter portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever in the HBO series.

Season three of The Last of Us is slated for a 2027 debut, after season two wrapped in May 2025. Craig Mazin will serve as the sole showrunner for the upcoming season after Neil Druckmann—co‑creator of the show and the video game series at Naughty Dog—departed at the conclusion of season two.

Goodman is represented by Gersh, Alexander by Curate, and Bailey by CAA.
