John McGinn has expressed immense pride after scoring the decisive goal in Scotland’s World Cup opening victory over Haiti, stating his hope that the win inspires young fans across the nation.
The Aston Villa midfielder’s deflected first-half strike secured Scotland’s first World Cup win since 1990, marking a significant milestone in their first appearance at the finals since 1998.
Despite a tense second half where Haiti pushed for an equalizer, Scotland currently lead Group C as they strive to reach the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
“It wasn’t my finest goal, but that doesn’t matter—it’s been a long time coming,” McGinn told BBC Sport. “I scuffed it slightly, but we got the result.”
“Haiti are a respectable side and we had to fight for the win. While there is room for improvement in our play, it was a must-win match and we delivered. I’m absolutely delighted.”
Scotland now face daunting challenges with fixtures against Morocco on Friday, June 19, and Brazil on Wednesday, June 24.
While manager Steve Clarke acknowledges the need for tactical refinement, McGinn believes the team will carry this momentum forward on the world stage.
“As a country, we have endured a lot of disappointment,” he noted. “An entire generation of fans has missed out on this. Seeing children heading to the parks in Scotland kits with their faces painted fills me with pride.”
“I hope the kids wake up tomorrow feeling that same sense of pride that I do. This victory sets a great foundation for our clash with Morocco.”
