Jorge Messi, the father of Argentine footballer Lionel Messi and longtime representative of the Inter Miami striker, has died at the age of 68 in Rosario, Argentina, following a battle with illness. The news was confirmed on Saturday, marking a deeply personal loss for one of the world’s most celebrated athletes.
Earlier this year, during the 2026 World Cup, speculation had arisen regarding Jorge’s health. In response, the Messi family acknowledged that he was dealing with “a health situation.” After scoring in Argentina’s opening match against Algeria, Lionel Messi became emotional and explained that his tears were not related to soccer, but rather due to the challenges his family was facing. He expressed gratitude toward his teammates and support staff during this difficult time.
Jorge is survived by his wife, Celia; his sons Lionel, Rodrigo, and Matías; and daughter María Sol. While he was unable to join the Argentine delegation in the United States for the World Cup, Lionel immediately flew to Rosario after the tournament concluded on July 19 to be by his father’s side before returning to play for Inter Miami, where he scored twice in a Leagues Cup match against San Luis.
Newell’s Old Boys, Lionel’s boyhood club, was among the first institutions to honor Jorge’s memory:

In addition, both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid paid tribute to Jorge. Barcelona said, “On behalf of the entire Barça family, we send our condolences to the Messi family. We are grateful to Jorge Messi for entrusting us with the early and most triumphant years of his son Leo’s career. May he rest in peace.” Real Madrid echoed similar sentiments, stating, “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Leo, his family, and all who love him. May he rest in peace.”
