Although a quarter-century has passed since their last major hit, Sugar Ray remains a touchstone for millennials like Julia Jacklin. The Australian singer-songwriter grew up immersed in Mark McGrath and company’s signature blend of late-’90s alt-rock and pop, prompting her to reinterpret the band’s single “Every Morning” for Triple J. “I’ve liked it since I was a little kid,” Jacklin explains. “I love any way to connect with my younger self as much as I can. I feel like we were singing it together: me now, and her back then. I’ve always enjoyed how spirited this song sounds… I don’t know, the song just makes me feel grateful to be alive. It makes me feel connected to the source of life.”
Jacklin is just over a month away from releasing her next album, The Gem, due September 25 via her new label, 4AD. She titled the record after a Melbourne pub where she tracked the project with her band.
