A six‑year‑old boy from Karachi died after plunging into a 200‑foot‑deep, historic well in the Garden area on Wednesday, according to rescue officials.
Rescue‑1122 spokesman Hassan ul‑Haseeb Khan identified the victim as Khalid Junaid. The child fell into a poorly covered well located in Ghas Mandi, Garden, close to Hanfia Masjid. Emergency responders dispatched a rescue team, an ambulance and a water‑rescue vehicle to the site.
The well held stagnant, contaminated water. After a strenuous recovery operation, rescuers pulled out the boy, who was unconscious and appeared to have inhaled toxic gases.
First aid was administered at the scene before the boy was transferred to the trauma centre of Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, where he later died, Mr. Khan added.
Man held for killing son
Police apprehended a man on Wednesday on charges of murdering his 17‑year‑old son in Baldia Town.
Ittehad Town police reported that Salman, aged 17, was allegedly beaten to death by his father, Abdul Wudood, at their residence in Gulshan‑i‑Ghazi on Tuesday night. The suspect has been taken into custody.
South DIG Syed Asad Raza stated that, after the alleged killing, the father attempted to bury the body discreetly. Police received a tip, recovered the body and arrested the suspect.
The corpse was moved to Dr. Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, where forensic doctors confirmed the cause of death was inflicted by hard and blunt instruments.
The suspect told investigators that he had repeatedly urged his son to quit drugs and stop stealing, but the teenager had failed to reform his ways.
