AZ Alkmaar’s Academy Continues to Cultivate Elite Midfield Talent with Kasper Boogaard in Focus
Born in Den Burg on Texel in January 2006, Boogaard started his career with local club Texel ’94 before joining AZ’s academy in 2017. He secured his first professional contract in 2022 and debuted for Jong AZ against Roda JC in February 2024.
His development surged over the next two seasons. After 17 Eerste Divisie appearances in 2024–25, Boogaard became a key figure for Jong AZ in 2025–26, adding four goals and eight assists across 23 league matches.
This output is notable given his role as a defensive midfielder, standing at 1.87m. While not a conventional ball-winner, his physicality and versatility allow him to transition between defensive and attacking phases effectively.
Boogaard excels as the deepest midfielder, initiating attacks from the back by receiving from center-backs. His adaptability, two-footed passing, and spatial intelligence enable him to shift momentum with minimal touches.
Defensively, he anticipates threats well and proactively challenges opponents. He maintains defensive responsibilities but is evolving into a modern number six role, contributing more in possession than as a physical enforcer.
His standout performances led to a contract extension until 2029. He also played a role in the Netherlands’ 2025 UEFA European Under-19 Championship victory.
His senior breakthrough came in the 2025–26 season. Boogaard earned his AZ debut in the UEFA Conference League against Crystal Palace in November 2025, followed by his first Eredivisie start versus PSV Eindhoven. He was permanently promoted to AZ’s first team in January 2026, recording two assists in over 700 minutes.
June reports linked him to Bologna, a potential move given the club’s interest in AZ players like Sam Beukema and Jesper Karlsson. However, staying at Alkmaar could offer vital experience against stronger opponents to refine his decision-making and defensive resilience.
Comparisons to Mats Wieffer—a former Feyenoord midfielder known for tactical awareness and clean distribution—highlight Boogaard’s profile. Like Wieffer, his value lies in anticipation and discipline rather than individual flair.
While not yet match-controlling at the highest level, his physique, two-footed passing, and exposure to AZ’s rigorous system position him as a promising developmental asset.
Whether he remains in Alkmaar, moves to Bologna, or pursues other opportunities, Boogaard represents a Dutch midfielder with potential to reach European prominence.
