Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha Extends Half Marathon World Record by Nearly Half-Minute
Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha extends the men’s half marathon world record by nearly half‑a‑minute, clinching victory at the World Athletics road race in Buenos Aires on Sunday in 56:51.
The 29‑year‑old previously set the record at 57:30 in Valencia in October 2024, but was overtaken by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo in March.
Kiplimo captured a time of 57:20 in Lisbon early this year; Kejelcha has since knocked off 29 seconds from that figure to reclaim the record, pending official ratification.
The world‑track silver medalist in the 10,000 m also holds the men’s road half‑marathon record.
Earlier this year he became one of the first men to run under two hours in approved conditions, finishing second to Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe in the London Marathon.
Sawe secured the record‑breaking race in 1:59:30, stripping Kejelcha by just eleven seconds.
