Kentucky Basketball Final Roster Spot Update from Mark Pope

With time running down, Kentucky’s basketball program still has a significant opportunity to fill its 15th roster slot. Traditionally, this is the time of year when we see reclassifications take place, as the summer AAU season concludes, leaving fewer athletes to bookend their professional commitments. International recruiting is another avenue that has seen key additions to the team’s roster since new head coach Mark Pope took over in Lexington.

There’s also the possibility of fifth-year seniors, whose eligibility was set to expire, potentially getting one additional year to play due to ongoing legal challenges.

“Every day, we’re actively speaking with international prospects, reclassifying athletes, transfer portal candidates, and those taking advantage of the fifth-year eligibility,” Pope told local reporters during his meeting on Friday. “There are potential game-changers out there.”

The latest high-profile player granted an additional year of eligibility is Auburn’s forward Keyshawn Hall, who averaged 19.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game last season.

Other notable players who could use an extra year of eligibility once their legal cases are resolved include Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler, UCLA point guard Donovan Dent, Texas guard Jordan Pope, UCLA guard Skyy Clark, and UC Santa Barbara guard Aidan Mahaney.

It remains to be seen if Pope will succeed in filling the roster spot. As the fall semester begins, we won’t have to wait much longer to learn the answer.
