EXCLUSIVE: Prime Video’s God of War will recast the lead role of Kratos, as the series’ production team replaces the actor after a serious on‑set injury, Deadline reports.
The decision follows careful deliberations by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios after Ryan Hurst, originally cast as Kratos, suffered a severe injury on the Vancouver set in late June.
Hurst, who had transformed his physique for the role by gaining roughly 40 lb of muscle, had been working for months before the accident. The injury required surgery and a lengthy recovery.
He tore his bicep during a stunt; the incident was first reported by TMZ. He is currently recuperating.
Production on God of War was halted immediately after the mishap and remains on pause.
The expected recovery timeline for a surgical bicep tear typically spans 4–6 months, with full strength restoration potentially taking up to a year. Because of the role’s physical demands, Hurst would likely be unable to resume filming until well into 2027.
While his health is the top priority, the necessary rehab period exceeded the series’ shooting schedule, prompting the difficult choice to recast Kratos.
Preparations for the recasting are slated to begin in mid‑August, with production expected to restart by mid‑October.
The two‑season, mythology‑driven God of War series, created by Ronald D. Moore, started filming in Vancouver in February. Four episodes had been completed before the injury, and the plan remains to shoot both seasons back‑to‑back. The existing footage featuring the child actor Callum Vinson as Atreus will likely need to be reshot because child actors age quickly.
Hurst’s recasting coincides with the upcoming release of Christopher Nolan’s film Odyssey, in which he appears.
God of War follows father‑and‑son protagonists Kratos and Atreus (Vinson) as they travel to scatter the ashes of Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, Faye. Through their journey, Kratos mentors his son about divinity while Atreus seeks to guide his father toward humanity.
The supporting cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.
Recasting a lead after an injury is rare. Notable precedents include O’Shea Jackson Jr replacing Winston Duke on Apple TV’s Swagger in 2020 and Netflix pausing Cowboy Bebop after John Cho’s knee injury in 2019.
God of War is co‑produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in partnership with PlayStation Productions and Ronald D. Moore’s Tall Ship Productions. Executive producers include Moore, Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee and Brad Van Arragon. Co‑executive producers are Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia and Ben McGinnis. Frederick E.O. Toye directed the first two episodes.
