The Men’s Selection Committee of India has announced a full-strength squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, set to commence on September 1, 2026. The matches are scheduled to take place at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in New Delhi on September 13, 15, and 17, 2026. The squad features Shreyas Iyer leading the side as captain, with Tilak Varma named as vice-captain, bolstered by experienced players across batting, bowling, and wicket-keeping departments.
However, former India opener Kris Srikkanth has heavily criticized the selection committee’s decision, characterizing the squad as a panicked reaction to India’s recent disappointing international performances. Following a 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland and a 4-0 loss to England in July 2026, selectors have opted for a conservative, star-studded lineup for the Afghanistan series, a move Srikkanth views as driven by fear rather than strategic planning.
“After the series losses in Ireland and England, the selectors have decided not to take a chance and picked a full-strength squad for Afghanistan. They are going all guns blazing, but this is a mistake. It’s against teams like Afghanistan that you should try out youngsters. Instead, you’ve picked a full-strength squad out of fear,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
Srikkanth further expressed concern over the selection committee’s conservative philosophy, pointing out that the squad closely mirrors the one fielded during the recent England tour. He argued that selecting a full-strength side out of fear deprives emerging talent of valuable match experience against a highly skilled yet relatively less experienced Afghan side. The former opener believes the committee is allowing recent setbacks to dictate short-term tactics instead of utilizing the series as a platform to build for the future.
Concerns over fitness clearances for four players
A major point of contention for Srikkanth is the inclusion of four players whose participation is contingent upon fitness clearances: Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, and Harshit Rana. Washington Sundar is currently recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the second ODI against England in Cardiff on July 17, 2026. Srikkanth questioned the rationale behind including players with unverified match fitness, arguing that a fitness clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) does not automatically translate to readiness for the high-pressure international environment.
“These four have not proved match-fitness. So on what basis are they subject to fitness? Just because you prove your fitness at the Bengaluru CoE, are you fit? That’s how Harshit Rana went to England, and then what happened to him there? So match fitness is important,” Srikkanth said.
