Despite ongoing debates over whether marijuana legalization has diminished the appeal of stoner comedies, filmmaker Dylan Meyer is pushing forward with a new crime-comedy centered on two dim-witted drug enthusiasts whose misinterpretation of danger leads them on a wildly misguided odyssey reminiscent of “The Big Lebowski.”
The film features Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat as close friends whose lives spiral into chaos after a case of mistaken identity leaves them oblivious to the serious threats surrounding them. Directed and written by Meyer, the project brings together an impressive ensemble including Lakeith Stanfield, Tony Hale, Zack Fox, Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, Kate McKinnon, and Geena Davis.
Set in Los Angeles, the film serves as both a tribute to the genre’s rich tradition of laid-back crime comedies and a distinctive voice-driven original work. Meyer emphasized the project’s unique perspective, noting in press materials that she didn’t want to simply replicate male-dominated stoner films through a female lens, but rather create something authentically reflective of its cast and characters.
“I don’t think there’s a single stoner female buddy movie,” Meyer observed, citing influences ranging from “Smiley Face” and “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America” to “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion,” “Repo Man,” “Pineapple Express,” and “The Big Lebowski.” She explained her approach: “I really related to The Dude, and I realized there was a lack of female characters like that. But I didn’t want to make a girl movie that was doing an impression of boy movies. I wanted to make a movie that felt true to the people that were in it and didn’t follow traditional comedic formula because it had to be truly itself.”
Stewart has expressed enthusiastic support for the project, which has been in development for several years. “Dylan wrote that script, ‘The Wrong Girls,’ years ago and we are producing it now,” Stewart said. “We start shooting in two weeks and I’m like doing backflips about it. I’m so excited we get to shoot in L.A. and that in and of itself seems like a fantasy. Alia Shawkat is my other ‘Wrong Girl’ and we’re putting it together, like in quite a literal way, right now.”
Neon will distribute “The Wrong Girls” in theaters beginning Friday, August 14. Watch the trailer below.
