Paris Saint-Germain secured a major Champions League victory over Barcelona, but the 4-2 win at the Parc des Princes was overshadowed by a serious injury to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and two further concerns for the French champions.
PSG confirmed that Kvaratskhelia ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The winger went down early in the second half following a challenge with Barcelona’s Xavi Espart and was unable to bear weight on his leg before being helped off the pitch.
The 25-year-old is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming days, although the club did not provide a timeline for his return. Kvaratskhelia was making his first Champions League start of the season after 11 appearances for PSG across all competitions.
Kvaratskhelia shared a message with supporters after receiving the diagnosis. “Why me? I was not ready for this,” he wrote, while vowing to return stronger.
PSG still ended the night celebrating after twice scoring in the final 10 minutes to overturn a 2-2 deficit. The victory preserved the reigning Champions League holders’ perfect record in the competition, with three wins from three matches.
PSG’s injury concerns deepen following Barcelona victory
Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos were also forced off during the match. PSG announced that Dembele sustained a left thigh injury, while Marquinhos was ruled out with a right thigh problem. Both players are expected to remain under treatment for the coming weeks.
Neither player is expected to feature in PSG’s next Ligue 1 match against Lyon on Oct. 25, although the club did not provide a firm return date for either member of the squad.
PSG were already missing Nuno Mendes, who sustained a left thigh injury against Strasbourg on Oct. 17 and is expected to remain sidelined for several weeks. The defender will also be unavailable for the trip to Lyon.
With Kvaratskhelia, Dembele, Marquinhos and Mendes unavailable, PSG are set to rotate heavily across both defense and attack in their upcoming fixtures.
