US inmate Christa Pike remains critically ill in the hospital, and her outlook remains uncertain after a botched execution attempt, her attorney said on Sunday.

In an interview with CNN on Sunday morning, Pike’s attorney Stephen Ferrell explained that medical staff are still working to remove two doses of pentobarbital from her system.

Pike, who is 50, received a death sentence after being convicted of the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer.

She survived two execution attempts on Wednesday and was subsequently taken to a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Ferrell stated, “She remains in the hospital on a ventilator, critically ill, and we still do not know her prognosis; it may be several days before we have more information.”

He said he does not believe she has regained consciousness at any point, noting that he has been receiving updates via her medical power of attorney instead of speaking directly with her doctors.

He has not visited her himself, adding, “She is under guard, and I am not certain who may have seen her.”

Authorities have not indicated whether they will attempt another execution of Pike, nor have they explained what went wrong. However, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has suspended all executions for the remainder of the year, and the state’s prisons commissioner said he will resign on Saturday.

Ferrell added, “If she does recover, she may not make a full recovery, and there could be questions about her competence—we simply do not know any of that yet.” He continued, “We have not had any discussions on the matter, and the Tennessee attorney general’s office has not provided any indication of what steps they intend to take.”
