The leading Democratic figure poised to assume the House speakership after the party’s anticipated congressional majority in January has declared strong backing for the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Hakeem Jeffries of New York told ABC’s This Week program that Hegseth had abused his authority, compromised national security, and orchestrated a reckless and costly war of choice with Iran.

Former Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, a critic of President Donald Trump, announced plans to introduce an impeachment resolution against Hegseth as early as Monday. The BBC requested comment from the Pentagon.

Congress reconvenes this week following the Democrats’ decisive victory in the midterm elections.

The proposed resolution by Massie includes eight articles of impeachment against Hegseth, one of which alleges violations of the War Powers Resolution of 1973 concerning U.S. involvement in the conflict with Iran.

Jeffries told ABC on Sunday, “I’m a firm ‘yes’ on pursuing the Hegseth impeachment resolution.”

He added, “Pete Hegseth must be removed from office.”

Jeffries, widely expected to become the next Speaker of the House—the chamber’s most influential position—has pledged that the newly empowered Democratic majority will act as a check on the Trump administration.

He further noted, however, that House Democrats are not currently prioritizing impeachment proceedings against President Trump.
