About fifty years later, Saint, now in her early eighties, returned to the big screen as Superman’s adoptive mother in the 2006 blockbuster Superman Returns.
She subsequently appeared in the supernatural fantasy Winter’s Tale alongside Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe, and starred in the 2019 nun drama Mariette in Ecstasy.
Saint, honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, remarked that her long career added extra depth to her performances.
“The longer you live, the wiser you become, for you have witnessed more,” she told TCM.
“Having navigated varied emotional experiences in your own life, you hopefully gain a clearer understanding.”
“And that, in turn, makes you a better actress.”
Saint’s marriage to Hayden endured for 65 years until his passing in 2016; she is survived by their two children.
