The free-to-play turn-based RPG, Legends of Starkadia, has recently been released on Steam to widespread acclaim. While the platform frequently offers free titles across various genres, this particular space adventure has quickly garnered significant attention. Developed by Doom Turtle, the game is currently available to claim at no cost.
Officially released on July 7, Legends of Starkadia is a brief yet highly praised experience. It currently holds a 100% positive review rating on Steam, indicating that all players who have evaluated the game were thoroughly impressed. Although the review pool is still small and the percentage may fluctuate as more players join, the title has made an excellent debut. The game offers approximately two hours of gameplay set on a single planet. Developers have confirmed that the full game will eventually feature 11 explorable planets; however, while the narrative is complete, the remaining content has yet to be developed by the studio.
The premise of Legends of Starkadia follows a “bored Earthling teen” thrust into a massive interdimensional conflict. To combat the empire’s forces, the protagonist assembles a “ragtag group of misfits.” The game features turn-based combat integrated with quick-time events, 12 playable characters, and a mix of a main campaign and side quests.
This indie title exudes a charming and quirky aesthetic that feels simultaneously adorable and familiar. Its turn-based mechanics draw comparisons to classic JRPGs such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. As additional content is anticipated in the future, the current offering provides an excellent opportunity to experience a well-crafted, free RPG on Steam.
