Leigh Batnick Plessner, Chief Creative Officer of Catbird, has played a pivotal role in defining the brand’s iconic aesthetic. Known for its minimalist, timeless fine jewelry, Catbird has become a staple in modern fashion. However, Plessner’s journey to the helm of this renowned label was anything but conventional.
After earning degrees in English literature and anthropology from Georgetown University, Plessner worked in service roles across Washington, D.C., including positions at coffee shops and as a cocktail waitress. Her career shifted when she joined Politics and Prose, a celebrated independent bookstore, eventually rising to sidelines buyer, where she curated non-book merchandise and developed a keen eye for design. This experience led her to launch her own stationery brand, Jezebel, and relocate to New York City.
In 2005, she connected with Rony Vardi, founder of Catbird, at a stationery trade show, joining the brand’s retail team shortly after. As Catbird expanded, Plessner transitioned fully to the company, evolving into a strategic creative leader. Today, she oversees the brand’s visual identity, from product styling to marketing narratives, and has orchestrated high-profile collaborations with artists like Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers, reinforcing Catbird’s reputation for artful, culturally resonant partnerships.
