Lewis Hamilton has apologised for his attitude after a disappointing qualifying session at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Speaking during the drivers’ parade ahead of the race at the Hungaroring, the seven‑time world champion reflected on a mixed‑emotion Saturday. He had originally locked in second place on the grid, only narrowly missing pole to McLaren’s Lando Norris.
However, his excitement faded when he received a three‑place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri at Turn 1 during Q3. A delayed radio call from Ferrari left Hamilton unaware of the approaching Australian on his fast lap.
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur later accepted responsibility for the miscommunication.
Although Hamilton showed clear frustration after qualifying, he has since expressed regret for his reaction to the penalty.
“It’s extremely hot today, so it will be a huge challenge. But it’s a new day with fresh opportunities,” Hamilton said during the parade, ahead of his fifth‑place start. “I hope I can fight for the win. Overtaking here is extremely tough, so strategy will be key.”

“Yesterday was difficult. Please forgive my attitude after qualifying—I had put together a strong lap, then received the call that Piastri was behind me at the very last moment.”
“Learning that I would be penalised was hard to accept, but that’s the way it is. I’ll move forward and give everything I have for the team today.”
Hamilton was not the only driver penalised. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli also received a three‑place grid drop for insufficient slowing under a yellow flag, moving him to seventh on the grid.
Lando Norris will start from pole, with Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc alongside him in second. Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen and Hamilton complete the top five.
