Local politicians are raising concerns over the potential risks posed by a new drone manufacturing facility in Mildenhall, following heightened tensions with Russia.
Mayor Russell Leaman of Mildenhall Town Council expressed unease about the factory’s visibility, noting that Russian statements about retaliatory measures have intensified scrutiny. “While daily life may not be immediately disrupted, some residents feel anxious,” Leaman said. “We’d welcome reassurance from authorities.”
The council has not received direct communication from national authorities offering clarity on the matter. Andy Neal, a West Suffolk councillor representing the area where the factory is located, criticized the decision to publicly disclose the facility’s presence, calling it a potential vulnerability. He emphasized that the factory’s proximity to RAF Mildenhall—home to the U.S. Air Force’s refuelling wing—could make the site a target for sabotage rather than aerial attacks. Neal also highlighted risks to the 500 jobs projected to be created at the facility.
A U.S. Air Force spokesperson confirmed that personnel in Europe remain on high alert to counter potential threats but declined to comment on specific security protocols. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) acknowledged that defense asset security is a priority, stating, “The first duty of government is national security. We take the safety of our people, sites, and communities seriously and continuously strengthen our protective measures.” The MoD added, “The UK and its allies will not hesitate to confront Russian aggression, both in Ukraine and against our own interests.”
Ukrspecsystems, the company operating the drone factory, has not yet provided a public statement regarding the concerns raised.
