Luka Modric has cemented his reputation as one of the most influential midfielders in soccer history during his illustrious spell at Real Madrid, setting a standard the club has struggled to emulate. Although he remains open to a post‑retirement return to the Bernabéu, Modric said that Jose Mourinho was the “most important factor” that secured his arrival in Spain.

After four remarkable seasons with Tottenham Hotspur, where he established himself among Europe’s elite playmakers, Modric transferred to Real Madrid in 2012 for a €35 million fee. Though critics initially questioned the move because of his modest profile, he quickly secured a starting position and became a club legend — a path he credits largely to Mourinho’s influence.

In an interview with Diario Marca, Modric attributed his signing to the Portuguese manager’s determination: “The club as a whole, but I believe Mourinho was the key factor in my arrival, because he did everything in his power to make me the signing of that summer.”

He explained that Mourinho was crucial in finalising the transfer. “Madrid had signed Michael Essien on loan and were looking for just one more player. Negotiating with Tottenham was difficult and prolonged. If Mourinho had not been so insistent, Real Madrid might have pulled out. His persistence made it clear he wanted me, which is why I consider him the most important.”

The 2012‑13 season, Mourinho’s last at Real Madrid, ended without a major trophy and saw the club eliminated in the UEFA Champions League semifinals. Modric lamented, “The only regret is that I didn’t spend more than a year under his guidance. I learned a great deal during that season, but I would have liked to play for him longer.”

Modric to return to Madrid

Under contract with AC Milan until June 2027, Modric dismissed the notion of a playing return to Real Madrid under Mourinho’s current setup, saying “it’s too late now.” Nonetheless, he affirmed his intention to settle in Madrid after retirement, with an executive or administrative role at the club ranking highest on his wish list.

When asked about a post‑playing return to the club, Modric said, “I hope so, I would like to. To be honest, I’m not hiding it. Madrid is my home, and I would love to return someday. The exact timing and role remain uncertain.”

He stressed that, should he return, he aims to contribute meaningfully rather than lean on his legacy, adopting the principle “work not in Real Madrid, but for Real Madrid.” This reflects Mourinho’s belief that any future position should help the club grow even larger.

On his long‑term plans, Modric reiterates his desire to return to Spain, though his exact post‑career trajectory is still undecided: “My intention is to return to Madrid and live there, but as you know, nothing is certain. Hopefully, it will happen.”
