New Delhi, October 17: Mumbai Indians have announced that Mahela Jayawardene will step down as head coach, ending a ten-year association with the franchise. The former Sri Lankan captain leaves behind a successful coaching legacy, having guided the five-time IPL champions to three titles during his tenure.
Jayawardene served as Mumbai Indians’ head coach across two stints, from 2017 to 2022 and again from 2024 to 2026. During this period, he played a significant role in shaping the team’s culture, emphasising discipline, collaboration and a team-first approach.
The franchise confirmed the development on Saturday, expressing gratitude for Jayawardene’s contribution and commitment over the years. His departure marks a significant change for Mumbai Indians as they prepare for the next phase of their IPL journey.
Mumbai Indians owner Nita M. Ambani praised Jayawardene’s leadership, integrity and passion for cricket, acknowledging the impact he had on the franchise.
“Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us,” Ambani said.
She added that Jayawardene would always remain a part of the Mumbai Indians family and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Jayawardene also expressed gratitude to the franchise, thanking Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their continued trust, support and friendship. He described Mumbai Indians as a special part of his journey and said he would always cherish the memories created with the players, coaching staff and supporters.
The former Sri Lanka skipper’s contribution extended beyond the IPL team. In 2022, he moved into the role of Global Head of Performance, overseeing the expansion of the Mumbai Indians franchise across international T20 leagues. He worked closely with coaching teams to establish a common cricketing philosophy across the organisation.
Under this broader structure, Mumbai Indians’ global teams also enjoyed considerable success. Mumbai Indians Women, MI New York and MI Emirates each secured a title, strengthening the franchise’s presence across different competitions.
Jayawardene’s departure closes an important chapter in Mumbai Indians’ history. His influence on the team’s playing culture, coaching structure and international expansion has made him a key figure in the franchise’s development over the past decade.
The announcement comes as Mumbai Indians look ahead to their future leadership and plans for upcoming seasons.
