Maine Senate Candidate Platner’s Wife Reveals Ongoing Sexting Scandal as Campaign Gains Momentum
Graham Platner’s insurgent campaign for the U.S. Senate in Maine faced a significant challenge last summer when his wife disclosed that he had been exchanging intimate messages with multiple other women.
The revelation came at a critical juncture as Platner’s effort to unseat incumbent Senator Susan Collins appeared to be gaining traction with voters, particularly among women who constitute a substantial portion of Maine’s electorate.
Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, informed a senior campaign aide that the couple, who married in November 2023, had been addressing the issue through marriage counseling. Current and former campaign officials provided varying accounts of the details surrounding the exchanges.
Genevieve McDonald, Platner’s former political director who left the campaign in October, stated that Gertner reached out shortly before a major Labor Day rally featuring Senator Bernie Sanders. At that time, McDonald said Gertner expressed concern about how her husband’s behavior might become a political liability for the campaign.
McDonald claimed Gertner told her that Platner had been communicating intimately with as many as a dozen women. A current campaign official offered a different figure, suggesting the communication involved up to six women and had ceased prior to the campaign’s official launch.
The matter surfaced when McDonald questioned Gertner about potential issues during an internal vetting process. According to the current official, Gertner informed the campaign that the couple had already addressed the situation through counseling.
The disclosure intensified Democratic concerns about the Maine race, viewed as crucial to determining control of the Senate this November. In response, Gertner released a statement suggesting McDonald had betrayed their trust, saying she was “deeply hurt” by what she described as an invasion of privacy.
“I confided deeply personal details about my marriage to someone I considered a friend,” Gertner said. “I trusted this person with the most private chapter of our lives—the early days of our marriage before any campaign was even on our minds.”
She emphasized that “our marriage today is stronger than ever before,” adding that she understood the man her husband had become.
Gertner also released a video acknowledging marital challenges while stating that both partners were receiving counseling. She criticized efforts to focus on negative narratives when Platner was working to improve lives of working people.
Separately, McDonald shared a screenshot of a text message from Gertner requesting campaign contact on August 27, 2025, which led to discussions about the intimate communications described as “sexting.”
McDonald argued that the Senate deserves “proven leaders with moral clarity and integrity,” while noting her own resignation along with two other campaign officials in October amid scrutiny of Platner’s social media history and a tattoo associated with Nazi symbolism.
Despite these controversies, Platner emerged as the presumptive Democratic nominee after his primary opponent withdrew. His campaign has been characterized as a movement, with some Democrats viewing him as representing the future of their party due to his populist message and working-class appeal.
