Mamelodi Sundowns have successfully defended their CAF Champions League crown, securing a 1-1 draw away to Morocco’s ASFAR in Rabat on Sunday to claim a 2-1 aggregate victory and win their second continental title.

With a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Tshwane, the Brazilian side faced early pressure at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

ASFAR dominated the early stages and were awarded a penalty in the 37th minute following a foul by Divine Lunga on Reda Slim, which was confirmed by VAR.

Mohamed Hrimat converted the penalty to level the match and the aggregate score.

Just before halftime, Brayan Leon and Tashreeq Matthews combined to set up Teboho Mokoena, who struck a decisive half-volley off the crossbar to restore Sundowns’ aggregate advantage.

In the 72nd minute, the hosts were given a lifeline when Ronwen Williams spilled a shot, leading to a second penalty after a VAR review.

However, Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams made amends with a diving save to deny Hrimat from the penalty spot, preserving the lead.

ASFAR pressed late in the match but failed to score a second goal, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The victory secured Sundowns’ second CAF Champions League title, adding to their 2016 triumph.
