Hong Kong police have arrested a 42-year-old man accused of dumping laundry capsules into a residential pond, resulting in the death of a catfish and injuries to dozens of turtles.
Authorities announced that officers were dispatched after a security guard first noticed significant foaming in a pond located within a Kam Ying Road residential development, where turtles were housed.
The guard took steps to safely relocate the aquatic animals and began cleaning the contaminated water.
The suspect was taken into custody on Friday facing charges of suspected animal cruelty.
An investigation reveals that a security officer promptly alerted authorities after discovering the dead catfish and 30 distressed turtles at the Kam Ying Court estate’s pond.
Review of security camera footage showed the suspect allegedly introducing laundry capsules into the water at 4:57 a.m. on Wednesday before fleeing the scene.
