Manchester City have secured the services of England international Niamh Charles, acquiring her from Chelsea for a reported £500,000.

The left-back signs a three-year contract after spending six seasons at Stamford Bridge, during which she made 173 appearances.

At 27, Charles collected five WSL titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups with Chelsea.

She was also part of the squad, under former manager Emma Hayes, that fell short in the 2021 Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona.

“I’m thrilled to join City and eager to get started,” said Charles, who began her career at Liverpool.

“Having watched them from the outside and faced them on the pitch over recent years, I’ve seen their success this season.”

“What they are constructing as a team aligns perfectly with my ambitions. It feels like the ideal move, and I hope we can enjoy many successful moments together.”

Her exit from Chelsea coincides with the arrival of Republic of Ireland international Katie McCabe, who transferred from Arsenal.

Charles brings valuable WSL and Women’s Champions League experience to City, while the England international aims to secure regular playing time to stake her claim in Sarina Wiegman’s squad for next year’s World Cup.

She has earned 34 caps for the Lionesses and converted a penalty in the shoot‑out victory over Spain in the Euro 2025 final.

Charles replaces Spain full‑back Leila Ouahabi, who departed City for Chicago Stars FC, and will wear the number 21 jersey.

City captured their first WSL title in ten years in May and are bolstering squad depth in the transfer window as they prepare to challenge on the European stage.

They have already completed the signing of England forward Beth Mead, who left Arsenal at the end of the season.

Crucially, City’s leading scorer Khadija Shaw agreed to a new four‑year deal in May, just days after it appeared she might leave on a free transfer.

City’s director of football, Therese Sjogran, commented: “Adding a player of Niamh’s calibre and experience to our squad following last season’s success is a significant boost.”

“We are excited to see what she can contribute, and despite her already impressive achievements, we believe her best years are still ahead.”

“She possesses the determination to improve daily and to inspire her teammates to do the same.”
