Manchester City’s ongoing legal battle with the Premier League has the potential to “spiral out of control,” according to a former top club executive.
Christian Purslow, who previously served as managing director at Liverpool and chief executive at Aston Villa, as well as holding a senior position at Chelsea, warned that the case could trigger a chain of events that would be “appalling for the game.”
The club has been found guilty of the vast majority of 115 charges brought forward by the Premier League.
The accusations against the club involved a wide range of rule breaches, centering on allegations that they inflated sponsorship revenue from associated companies and made other “off-the-books” payments to circumvent football’s financial regulations.
Premier League clubs are currently seeking legal advice regarding potential compensation related to the charges, while reports indicate that Manchester City will appeal the decision.
Sanctions against the club have yet to be officially announced, but potential repercussions could range from a points deduction and expulsion from the Premier League to a substantial fine.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Purslow appeared alongside football law expert Paul Gilroy KC, who characterized the case as a “seismic moment for world football.”
Purslow explained, “It’s a sort of ‘where does this end?’ because if you look at every single season—the nine seasons we now know Manchester City breached the rules—then all 19 of their Premier League rivals in those seasons suffered easily quantifiable losses to varying extents. Whether it was a place in the Premier League, where every position was worth £3 million, or otherwise.”
“Teams that finished fifth and missed out on the Champions League may have lost tens of millions of pounds, and of course, the relegated teams suffered as well. For instance, the team that finished 18th would likely have finished 17th if Manchester City had not been in the league, and they, too, suffered significant financial losses.”
“If you add up all those claims over nine years—and that is just within the Premier League—the potential for this situation to spiral out of control is immense.”
“I truly hope that common sense prevails and that a comprehensive solution can be reached between the authorities and Manchester City, one that addresses all these issues and attempts to draw a clear line in the sand.”
“Because an endless cascade of legal claims and uncertainties lasting another four or five years would be absolutely appalling for the sport.”
Gilroy added that, to date, four clubs have filed protective claims “reserving the right to seek compensation if City are found guilty.”
