Manchester United have made a late approach for Aston Villa left-back Ian Maatsen, according to Sky Sports.
Although Luke Shaw remains the undisputed first-choice at left-back, United are seeking cover in the position. The added demands of Champions League football, combined with Shaw’s injury history, have highlighted a lack of squad depth.
Deputy Patrick Dorgu has shown defensive vulnerabilities, prompting the club to explore the market. Sky Sports reports that United submitted an enquiry for Maatsen this week, but Aston Villa rejected the approach immediately.
Having already lost key players such as Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans, Villa have no intention of selling the Dutch international. Instead, the club is preparing to open negotiations over a new long-term contract with improved terms.
Villa suffered a disastrous start to their Premier League campaign, falling to a 4-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion. They will look to respond when Arsenal visit Villa Park on Monday.
