Under-pressure manager Michael Carrick oversaw a chaotic 4-4 draw at Old Trafford, doing little to quieten the growing unrest among the home support.
Manchester United staged a thrilling late comeback to secure a 4-4 draw against Aston Villa at Old Trafford, much to the dismay of the furious home supporters during a turbulent campaign.
The hosts found themselves two goals down inside the opening four minutes of this high-pressure encounter, but fought back with two dramatic stoppage-time goals to share the points.
Despite this dramatic result, the 13-time Premier League champions remain in the relegation zone, sitting in 18th position with just eight points from ten matches. However, manager Michael Carrick can breathe a temporary sigh of relief after avoiding a fifth defeat, keeping his job prospects alive for the time being.
Carrick was on the verge of heading into the international break following another crushing defeat that would almost certainly have sealed his dismissal.
However, late strikes from Joshua Zirkzee and Patrick Dorgu in the six minutes of added time rescued a point, leaving the long-term future of their manager still very much under intense scrutiny.
The English manager had already been granted a stay of execution by the club’s hierarchy, who opted to retain him in charge following a disappointing defeat at Chelsea the previous weekend.
United had responded to their league struggles by ending a nine-match winless run across all competitions, navigating a 3-2 comeback victory over Roma in the Champions League the previous Tuesday.
Yet, with only three victories in fifteen games this season, the club was quickly plunged back into turmoil as they fell two goals behind in rapid fashion.
Alysson broke the deadlock in the very first minute, his shot squirming through the grasp of goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
Nicolas Jackson doubled the advantage just three minutes later, capitalizing on a weak parry from Lammens to slot the ball home.
Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 16th minute following a foul by Boubacar Kamara on Matheus Cunha, before Youri Tielemans leveled the scores in the 44th minute with a powerful strike.
John McGinn restored Villa’s lead from the penalty spot in the 48th minute after Diogo Dalot committed a clumsy foul on Alysson.
Leon Goretzka added a fourth for the visitors from close range in the 53rd minute, capitalizing after Leny Yoro’s header struck his own crossbar.
Joshua Zirkzee’s stoppage-time strike sparked a late surge of hope, and Patrick Dorgu headed home a dramatic equalizer in the final seconds of the match after a weak punch from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.
Carrick cut a bewildered figure as he headed down the tunnel, with United’s next fixture set to be a challenging trip to Liverpool on November 22.
Chelsea Suffer Embarrassing Defeat at Sunderland
Chelsea arrived at the Stadium of Light aiming to bolster their hopes of securing a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
Instead, they departed thoroughly embarrassed after a humbling defeat to third-bottom Sunderland, who celebrated just their second league victory of the season.
Fifth-placed Chelsea have now suffered four defeats in their first ten league matches under former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso.
The visitors were rocked in the 36th minute when Enzo Le Fee converted a penalty after Brian Brobbey was fouled by Levi Colwill.
“We failed to create enough chances in the final third against their low block. We struggled to control and sustain our attack in that area,” Alonso remarked post-match.
Liverpool Return to Winning Ways with Victory over Crystal Palace
Liverpool returned to winning ways, securing a convincing 3-1 victory at lowly Crystal Palace.
Following defeats against Arsenal and Fenerbahce, questions had been raised about manager Andoni Iraola in his inaugural season at the helm, but this win helped quiet those doubts.
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a header from Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross.
Florian Wirtz doubled the lead in the 54th minute, delivering a composed finish after latching onto a cross from Bradley Barcola.
Alexander Isak sealed a comfortable win in the 89th minute, finishing off a pass from Florian Wirtz to cap off a crucial victory for the fourth-placed Reds.
“It was a crucial victory for us heading into the international break, especially after the week we’ve had,” Iraola stated.
Eddie Nketiah grabbed a late consolation goal for Palace, converting a stoppage-time penalty following a foul by Milos Kerkez.
