Manchester United have identified Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder João Gomes as a priority target, according to Globo Esporte.
The Red Devils have already secured Andrey Santos from Chelsea to strengthen their midfield, with an official announcement expected this weekend. United had been heavily linked with Atalanta’s Ederson, but withdrew from negotiations due to concerns over a recent knee injury.
Gomes has now emerged as the leading alternative. The Brazilian international is widely expected to depart Molineux following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League. Atlético Madrid were initially considered frontrunners for his signature, but the Spanish champions opted to sign Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP instead.
Despite Atlético’s withdrawal, Gomes continues to attract significant interest. Reports suggest United could face competition from Liverpool for the highly-rated defensive midfielder. Wolves are reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £40 million for the 25-year-old, who is keen to remain in the Premier League next season.
