Manchester United’s senior players have returned to Carrington for the start of pre‑season training.
The squad that gathered in front of newly appointed head coach Michael Carrick and his coaching staff on Thursday reflects only part of the roster he will have before the opening Premier League match of the 2026‑27 season against Hull City on 22 August.
None of the World Cup participants are available yet.
Dutch centre‑back Matthijs de Ligt remains in recovery from back surgery.
Potential new signings Andrey Santos and Karl Darlow are close to finalising moves from Chelsea and Leeds respectively, while there is no update on Ederson’s possible transfer from Atalanta.
For now, nine senior players have been photographed at Carrington alongside Carrick.
Because World Cup players are granted three weeks of recovery after exiting the tournament, several academy prospects are expected to feature in United’s first two pre‑season fixtures: a match against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July and a encounter with Norwegian side Rosenborg in Trondheim on 24 July.
The most recent pre‑season friendly in the previous summer was scheduled a week after Euro 2024 concluded; this time the schedule aligns with the conclusion of the World Cup.
Under former manager Erik ten Hag, 13 academy players were incorporated into the first‑team setup, with an additional five traveling but not taking part.
Seven of those 13 have since departed, and five have been loaned elsewhere at least once. Only Jack Fletcher, who appeared as a substitute in the latter half, has remained at Old Trafford for the past two seasons.
Fletcher is one of just four of those youngsters to have featured for the senior side since the Murrayfield tour, having made three cameo appearances. Toby Collyer (13 appearances), Harry Amass (seven) and Ethan Wheatley (one) are the others.
Being selected for the Finland or Norway tour does not guarantee a seamless transition into the first team, but it provides youngsters with a valuable opportunity to showcase their abilities.
Below are several players to watch.
