Maresca Addresses Guardiola Succession and Dismisses Transfer Rumors

During his debut press conference since taking over from Pep Guardiola last month, Enzo Maresca addressed the inevitable comparisons to the Catalan manager, who secured 20 trophies during a decade-long tenure at the club.

The 46-year-old is acutely aware of the massive legacy he inherits, having previously served as Guardiola’s assistant during the historic Treble-winning 2022-23 campaign.

“I view it as a privilege; indeed, my connection to Pep is the reason the club chose me, which is an honor,” Maresca remarked.

“I have maintained many times that I consider Pep to be the greatest coach of the last 20 to 25 years. Replacing him is undoubtedly a significant challenge.”

Maresca, who departed Chelsea in January following an 18-month spell, noted the unique stability of the club, which has employed only three managers over the past 16 years.

“That level of continuity is rare,” he noted. “I am confident in our ability to build upon the excellent foundation established over the last 14 or 15 years, dating back to the era of Roberto Mancini.”

“I am already very familiar with the club’s organization and personnel from my previous time here. The internal structure is designed to allow everything the necessary time to develop.”

“From the moment Manchester City reached out to me, I had no hesitation about joining such a magnificent club.”

While hinting that there is still “work to be done” during the current transfer window, Maresca declined to comment on specific player movements. This included speculation regarding goalkeeper James Trafford’s potential departure and the return of Jack Grealish, who has rejoined training following a loan spell at Everton last season.
