WASHINGTON — The Marine Corps officially accepted its final MV-22 Osprey aircraft, marking the completion of a program that has fundamentally transformed military aviation capabilities.
The aircraft represents the 359th Osprey delivered to the Marine Corps and concludes the original program of record, according to a Marine Corps news release. With the fleet now complete, the service is redirecting resources toward comprehensive modernization initiatives to extend the aircraft’s operational lifespan through 2055.
Since achieving initial operating capability in 2007, the Marine Corps’ Osprey fleet has accumulated over 686,500 flight hours across 114 operational deployments. The tiltrotor aircraft’s unique ability to perform vertical takeoffs and landings while maintaining the speed and range of conventional aircraft has made it invaluable for transporting troops, equipment, and supplies between naval vessels and land-based installations, as noted by Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR).
“The MV-22B didn’t just join our fleet; it fundamentally changed the way the Marine Air-Ground Task Force generates combat power,” said Lt. Gen. William Swan, deputy commandant for aviation. “It provides commanders with decision space that only speed and reach can provide, connecting ships, bases, and distributed forces in ways previous generations could only imagine. Today, Marine commanders build operations around the assumption that the MV-22B will be there.”
The modernization program focuses on several key areas including improvements to nacelle wiring systems to reduce maintenance requirements, standardization of aircraft configurations, and component upgrades designed to enhance both safety and sustainability, according to Marine Corps officials.
“We cannot assume that because the MV-22B transformed Marine aviation once, its evolution is complete,” Swan emphasized. “It is our responsibility to carry this legacy forward and ensure this aircraft remains ready, relevant, safe and lethal for the fight ahead.”
Despite its operational success, the Osprey fleet has experienced significant challenges in recent years, including multiple fatal crashes. A June 2022 accident that claimed five Marines was attributed to a hard clutch engagement, where the clutch temporarily slips before reengaging. Additionally, an Air Force Osprey crash off the coast of Japan in November 2023 resulted in eight fatalities and led to a fleet-wide grounding ordered by the Pentagon in December 2023. An Air Force investigation determined gearbox failure as the cause.
NAVAIR, which oversees the V-22 joint program office, lifted the grounding in March 2024. However, the command issued guidance in December 2023 requiring gearbox inspections before each flight and implementing operational limitations until gearbox upgrades are completed or aircraft reach predetermined flight thresholds. These restrictions remain in effect.
NAVAIR has declined to release specific details about flight hour thresholds or the number of affected aircraft, citing security considerations.
To address the hard clutch engagement issue, Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Jacob Sugg confirmed that the service is developing a redesigned input quill assembly (IQA), which houses the clutch mechanism and connects the aircraft’s engine to the drive system.
“In the meantime, the present flight-hour restriction on the IQA implemented in February 2023 has resulted in no further Hard Clutch Engagements,” Sugg stated via email.
