Mark Coles Appointed as Zimbabwe Women’s Head Coach

Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed the appointment of New Zealander Mark Coles as the head coach of the women’s national team. Following a rigorous recruitment process, the board officially announced the selection on Monday. Coles will begin his tenure during Zimbabwe’s historic five-match T20I series against South Africa later this week.

Experienced Coach to Lead Zimbabwe Women

The appointment marks a significant milestone for Zimbabwe’s women’s cricket program, bringing in a leader with extensive international and high-performance experience.

Coles previously served as head coach for both the Pakistan and Scotland women’s teams, while also assisting Scotland’s men’s side. His professional background further includes serving as a high-performance manager for Cricket Papua New Guinea and undertaking coaching consultancy roles in Australia.

His diverse background is expected to be instrumental as Zimbabwe aims to fortify its women’s program and establish a more consistent development pathway from emerging talents to the senior national squad.

Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani praised the appointment, specifically highlighting Coles’ deep understanding of the women’s game as a key attribute. He stated: “Mark Coles brings extensive international coaching and high-performance experience, as well as a strong understanding of the demands of the women’s game.”

Zimbabwe Look to Build a Stronger Pathway

Coles will not be alone in this endeavor as Zimbabwe works to create a more structured environment for its women’s teams. Rangarirai Manyande has been appointed Assistant Coach (Batting), and Trevor Phiri will oversee fielding duties. These appointments are part of a broader initiative by Zimbabwe Cricket to enhance its technical and support structures across both senior and Under-19 levels. The board believes that experienced coaching personnel combined with a clearer development framework will help the country build a highly competitive women’s side over the long term.

Mukuhlani emphasized this broader objective, noting that the coaching appointments are intended to establish a foundation for sustained success. For Coles, the immediate challenge lies in translating his vast experience into tangible results on the international stage. Zimbabwe now has the opportunity to make a strong early statement under their new leadership against one of Africa’s premier women’s cricket teams.

Historic South Africa Series Awaits

Coles’ first assignment will come against South Africa, as the two nations prepare for a landmark five-match T20I series. This will be the first-ever international series contested between the two countries, adding significant historical weight to the occasion.

The opening T20I is scheduled for Friday, September 11, at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. All five matches will be played at the same venue, providing Coles and his squad with an extended opportunity to evaluate their players and establish their playing strategy.
